Well made. May 29, 2010 Shirley Carter (SE Okla) I have owned several of the "el cheapo" splatter screens. They were all in the trash bin long ago. This one looks good and is well made too. Should last me a long time. It is also reinforced by the stainless steel wires across the center, and they are bent in 4 places, to serve as legs, and hold it up off the counter.
Sturdy construction April 24, 2010 Terrence J. Hlavaty (Glen Ellyn, IL) Well built, strong handle and brace. Well worth the couple extra dollars to get one that should last a long time.
Anti splatter shield April 13, 2010 Marvin O. Modeen Great product, and when you set it on the counter upside down the feet keep it from leaving grease all over the counter top. Hope they make it in a smaller size.
Great Screen......Good Price March 24, 2010 Ambergris (New England.....USA) I have owned this very same screen for some time now. Although it is not specifically designed just for camping, its during my hiking trips that I have used it the most. Most camp cooking that is done over an open fire is still done the old fashioned way by frying. And since a camp fire flame is in no way as easily controlled as your home stove, that can make for an awful lot of splatter of whatever good fixen's you happen to be cooking up. A splatter screen is a much better alternative on a camping trip over a glass lid if your not going to make any one pot dinners. Its easier to be without as far as carrying it along, and its one less thing that has to be scrubbed. Not to mention that food over an open fire requires a lot more tending too than fried foods at home. This Progressive splatter screen is easy and light to carry, and at 13 inches it easily fits most common outdoor cooking gear. Its definitely sturdier built than many I have seen in sporting goods stores that cost even more, and the added feet are a true godsend when you are dealing with a fire that is surrounded by dirt and crawly things passing by. The wire mesh is good and strong as well, and faithfully blocks all manner of grease and gravy that refuses to stay put in the pan.
One thing that is never mentioned in any ads for splatter screens is there being rather a pain to clean. The wire mesh is not only very dense, but it is many times clogged with bacon drippings and other greasy type leftovers. You have to be careful in scrubbing these screens for sooner than later the mesh will start separating. On the trail I have devised a pretty good system that has kept my screen looking good for going on 5 years now. Before the grease sets on the screen, spray with either a mix of dish detergent and water, or even better a degreaser solution that I always take along anyway. Let it set for a minute or two and then pour some water through it. Even better, if you have a creek of some kind running nearby, apply your solution and then swish it in the water for a minute or so, and then dry it by moving it over the open fire. (Avoid scrubbing it, but do it gently if it can't be avoided. Scrubbing will only serve to separate the steel fiber over time). Any stubborn residue will easily come off with a damp cloth now, and the heat drying will sanitize it better than any dirty brush you happen to have along. Most importently, your mesh will stay clean and intact for many hiking trips to come. This screen is very reasonably priced here on Amazon, and I highly recommend it. You won't be necessarily get anything better for more money, just bigger if you need it...
Brilliant Design... March 5, 2010 Robert J. Harris (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The heavier gauge wire frame along with the finer mesh screen makes this superior to any other splatter screen I have seen on the market in my opinion. The support structure across the top adds a lot of strength and also works as a elevated rest when flipped upside down and set on a counter -- this is very smart. The inverted elevated rest also helps to keep counters from being exposed to an oily mess.
I have used it heavily for two months exposing it to acids and salt, and no signs of degradation is present.
Another reviewer has stated that the mesh screen will not allow steam to escape and causes food to be "steamed" undesirably. To that reviewer I have to ask what planet they are cooking on? Though it's very fine mesh, it's definitely not keeping moisture in it's far too coarse to hold in rising steam.
